We had a large family and no extra money for vacations. I was lucky that I did get to spend some summers with my cousin (thanks to my aunt and uncle) up at the river, We did take occasional day trips up to a resort area in Napa, Ca, with our family, that was about it. When I was reall young I got to travel to Texas to visit my grandparents, aunts and uncles with my father. Mom did not like the hot weather, and of course stayed home with my younger brothers.

Not for my first 12 years. After that sometimes my step father would take us to the suburbs. That was about 5 miles away but a nice treat at that time. Another time was a carpeting company's man made water fall in the city. I didn't expect too much. When I was about 14 and 15 I went to a Y.M.C.A. camp and loved it. A few years later I joined the Marines and traveled to Spain, Greece, North Africa, Puerto Rico, St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands, and many of our United States.
Later many of our United States and Canada and Mexico.

Yes, we did take family vacations. Mother, Father, me and my 3 brothers went every summer to Crystal Beach, Ontario. We spent the summer in a cottage with the beach a few steps away. Nearby was an amusement park. So we had great fun - swimming and water skiing (my brothers more than me because I am not well coordinated). For thrills, there was the giant roller coaster called the Comet, but I was afraid to go on it, but my brothers (brave little men) did.

Bellpepper, your family vacations do seem like heaven!

We very rarely went on vacations. My mom didn't like to travel. My dad was often either working two jobs or was working out of town for extended periods. We'd go to family reunions, but never more than a day or two. We visited aunts and uncles who had cabins on a lake...another day trip. We had one vacation when we drove from Ohio to Florida, in 1964 before Disney. One vacation when we drove from Florida back home to Ohio to visit relatives. If it weren't for the Girl Scouts and the American Legion sending me to Girls State I would never have gone camping or spent a week at our State Capitol.

An interesting episode from our 1964 trip to Florida, this is something that I didn't fully appreciate until I was much older: We visited St. Augustine in June of 1964. Now, I was from a steel mill town in eastern Ohio, and didn't even know what the word desegration meant, nor did I understand what the sign that said "colored" meant on the bathroom doors......I was only 6 years old. My family was eating lunch at a restaurant when the man who served our water whispered something to my dad. The next thing you know....my dad hustled to pay the bill and made us get up and leave....I was still eating! Turns out, Martin Luther King Jr. had just gotten into town and there was a demonstration starting near the restaurant....the man who whispered to my dad was an African American gentleman who was concerned about 'the little ones', my 4 year old sister and I. I learned several years later that the KKK and many African Americans had been fighting and protesting in St. Augustine, and that Dr. King was arrested the day we were visiting.

Live is always an adventure.....:)

My dad was a work-a-holic.

He was a builder and worked everyday of the week.

No vacations for us.

The only time he took a day off was for a funeral or a family reunion, up one of our mountains.

Reunions were fun . . .Funerals were sad, but seeing relatives were fun.

We went to the Jersey Shore for a weekend with my parent's friends who had a daughter the same age as me. Our fathers went on a fishing boat overnight (really) and our mothers took us out on the boardwalk where there were rides, etc.
Later, by Dad bought a little fishing cabin on the Susquehana river.......no electricity, no running water & an outhouse! I loved it. We went there every weekend.

Not much. We sometimes drove to whatever town my oldest brother was living in, for a few days. Big deal. Made Mom happy, tho.
Once, Mom rented a cabin for me and my little brother for a week. She had to work, so she set my aunt out there to watch over us. Such bliss! Swimming at the lake, building campfires on the beach. Sitting on a floating log in the lake. Aunt didn't watch us. She stayed inside the cabin, cooked our meals. We were on our own. What heaven!

Yep! We actually did it in covered wagons! 0.o

Just kidding. We had wonderful vacations when the kids actually rode in the same car as their parents, played games while on the road, and actually "talked" to each other. :-)

That sounds really nice!
We had two basic types of vacations. One was to New York, because my parents were born/raised there, and still had family there.
Or we'd go to a family-owned ranch in Northern California. It had both cabins and a hotel. Many activities were available, including swimming, hay rides, horseback riding, square dancing, hiking, table tennis.
Both types of vacations were great!! Thanks for bringing back great memories.

Yes we did as a matter of fact. The longest trip that we ever made was going to Colorado from Oklahoma to visit my aunt, uncle and cousins that lived there at the time. But the other trips that we took were always going to a lake. We always slept in mom and dads camper shell they have on their truck. They had a sheet of plywood in the back next to the cab and they had a mattress on that for them to sleep on and then a folding bed for each of us to sleep on. Had a "pot" to use as a toilet and had our own food and drinks as well. Mom would hang a sheet on a line that went from a tree to another tree and that is where we would change our clothes and bathe as well. It was also used to hang our wet clothes when we were done swimming for awhile. We would cook hamburgers and hot dogs over an open flame with a wire rack that had came out of an old refrigerator. Those were the good old days, lol.

No not as a whole family. Once my mom, my aunt and myself traveled by train to Utah to visit relatives. I suppose there wasn't enough money to go on trips, or we would have.
