Two most serious problems now confronting humanity deserve early appreciation and action by everyone in all countries. These are the problems of global warming and the rising world temperatures, now manifesting in unusual weather behavior in many parts of the globe.
Scientists have been reporting their initial findings on these problems some years back but their reports did not get much attention by people before. It is only now that environmental conditions are deteriorating that people are starting to get concerned.
The depleted forests around the world are a main reason for these two major environmental problems. The cutting of trees for lumber without their proper replenishment went on over the years, thus causing the baldness and the denudation of the mountains. The lumbers from trees were the main source for the making of houses, household and office furniture, and a host of other things, like folding camping chairs.
At the same time that man has been cutting trees with neglectful abandon, he has been accumulating discarded appliances and other household items made of metals and plastic in huge garbage piles adding to the imbalances in the environment. This non-biodegradable garbage has always been an eyesore in landfills before, before the idea of recycling came into being.
Good that it is now common practice to recycle metals and plastic back into reusable material for the making of more appliances, furniture, even non-wooden door and windows for the houses of the future. Plastic and PVC ready-made doors and windows are now in standard use in houses and buildings that are also now constructed using concrete materials instead of wood.
The recycled materials are now the new mines of the future for metals and plastics, thus slowing the earth's exploration by the mines before digging for iron, copper and other metals.
The forests can now grow undisturbed and recover into their former dominance over the earth's soil cover. Even paper, which also used to come from trees will have minimal use now with the shift to paperless communication means.
Office files requiring so much paper before are now in digital forms stored not even in office cabinets, but in digital files stored in cyberspace. These cyberspace digital files are even in much safer storage today, free from the fires that totally wiped out office records before.
Newspapers will one day likely become obsolete as the people shift to radio, television and other media outlets for their information needs. The Internet is also another major replacement of newspapers and magazines, thus stopping the use of the trees for the manufacture of paper. When you need to acquire some new portable camping chairs for your campouts this summer, get the non-wooden kinds, to do your part in the restoration of the world’s environment. One buyer less of camping outdoor chairs this year could probably make the manufacturers phase out wood as the material for making their camping furniture, and shift faster to the use of recycled synthetic plastic materials for the purpose.
